how to help
- turn the lights off when leaving a room -
doing this conserves electricity!
when you waste electricity, it causes more fossil fuels to be burned for no reason!
- using a reusable cup at your local coffee shop instead of a plastic one -
most plastic cups end up in a landfill,
and plastic straws kill cute turtles :( BRING A REUSABLE CUP!
- carpooling (instead of taking your own car) -
carpooling reduces traffic congestion
(and everyone hates traffic) and also decreases greenhouse gas emissions by 3.72 kilograms!
- having something vegetarian for dinner instead of meat -
did you know that producing
one burger uses enough fossil fuel to drive a car 20 miles? more than one-third of all fossil
fuels in the US are used for raising animals to eat.
- compost your leftover food -
composting is a direct way to reduce C02 and other greenhouse gases.
- thrift clothes, instead of buying fast fashion -
the average American throws out 81 lbs of clothing per year. going to second
hand clothing stores significantly reduces the amount of clothes going to landfills.
- buy local organic food -
importing food and transporting it across the country uses tons of electricity and
fossil fuels. buy from local farmers' markets as much as you can!
- recycle as much as possible -
when our trash is sent to an incinerator, it spreads CO2 and other greenhouse gases
into the atmosphere. recycling will also reduce the amount of plastic in the ocean and in landfills.
- reduce water use -
consider air drying clothing and turning off the faucet when brushing your teeth.
- bring reusable bags when shopping -
8 million metric tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year, according to Plastic Pollution.
it's equivalent to five grocery bags filled with plastic for every foot of coastline in the world.
- take shorter showers -
according to Mother Jones, we would save 20.9 billion pounds of CO2 a year if we all shaved
one minute off our shower sessions.
